Gathering the Fragments of What Remains

“I feel that art has something to do with achievement of stillness in the midst of chaos. A stillness which characterizes prayer, too, and the eye of the storm. I think that art has something to do with an arrest of attention in the midst of distraction.” – Saul Bellow

I began this panel during the workshop to demo several techniques. When I returned home I felt compelled to finish it in the solitude of my studio. It changed quite a bit since its initial start. I finished it sometime last week. I actually have a lot of thoughts about this piece, but I’d rather keep quiet. Sometimes I feel like I talk too much about my paintings. Well, I need to, I like to, and it’s part of my creative process. But at the same time, I would also rather hear how it speaks to the viewer before I spill my own thoughts.

But I will share this: after I titled this piece, I did a search on the title. Sometimes I do that just to see what comes up. Curiosity. This verse came up and to me it spoke of pulling together into wholeness that which is broken or cast aside as worthless. Hmmmmm.

He told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over,
so that nothing may be lost.”
John 6.12
